Largest growth in permanent placements since July 17 as demand for skilled staff continues to rise

According to the latest Report on Jobs by the Recruitment Employment Confederation (REC) January 2018 has seen the strongest rise in recruitment agencies introducing candidates to permanent positions since last July with the North of England experiencing the fastest increase.  Starting salary inflation hit a 31-month record as the number of candidates available for employment continued to contract sharply in January, coupled with a continued growth in the number of jobs created.  The IT sector led the way in terms of levels of demand for staff, following closely by Engineering and Accounting/Financial.

By contrast, the demand for temporary staff softened to a 10 month low but still experienced a sharp demand overall, with the Midlands leading the way in terms of the quickest increase. January also saw a sustained decline in the availability of short-term candidates in the Midlands and as a result, temporary pay rates rose at a strong pace.

The above follows the recent news that in the 3 months to November 2017, the total number of people in employment reached 32.2 million, the highest on record. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) also reported that the employment rate for 16-64 year olds rose to 75.3%, the joint highest since comparable records began in 1971.
