Latest Employment News
According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the proportion of people aged from 16 to 64 who were in work between April and June 2017 in the UK was 75.1%. This is the highest since records began in 1971. The rate of unemployment for the same period was 4.4%, which is down from 4.9% for one year earlier and the lowest since 1975. This continues the trend of high job creation which has certainly been the case locally in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire market as employers continue to search for the best talent.
In addition to this data, the August published report from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) for July 17 shows that staff appointments via a recruitment agency have increased at the fastest rate for 2 years but a marked decline in staff availability continues to contribute to further increases in pay. Permanent appointments increased for the highest rate for 27 months and temporary positions filled rose to a near two-and-a-half year high. The demand for staff within Engineering was top of the rankings for July, followed by Accounting/Financial and IT & Computing in second and third place respectively. Starting salaries for permanent candidates rose further, with the rate of inflation reaching a 20-month record. In addition, hourly pay rates for temporary staff continued to increase sharply.
The chief executive of the REC, Kevin Green, commented that “as competition for talent intensifies, REC data shows that employers are increasing starting salaries to tempt candidates to move jobs. However for their existing staff, wage increases are not keeping up with inflation. The conclusion is that talking to a recruiter and finding a new job is the best way to get a bigger pay packet.”
